The Duane V. Blackwell Hospice Program for Veterans

The Duane V. Blackwell Hospice program was developed to address the need for veteran-specific end-of-life care for those that sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.

At refined Hospice & Home Health, we understand the rigors of military service as many of our employees from the CEO to our volunteers have served or have family members who have served our country honorably.

What is the We Honor Veterans Program?

We Honor Veterans is a partnership between the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Hospice agencies, state hospice organizations, hospice-veteran partnerships, and VA facilities are welcome to join the pioneering program.

The goal is to provide hospice care for veterans based on a foundation of compassionate listening, respectful inquiry, and grateful acknowledgment of military service.

The program teaches hospice volunteers how to handle veteran-specific physical and emotional issues that may arise near the end of life.

Here at Refined Hospice & Home Health, we actively recruit veteran volunteers who can connect more deeply with patients through shared experiences. They’ll learn the life stories of veterans using that information to promote a peaceful passing.

NO VETERAN DIES ALONE

This program is designed to honor veterans and to meet the needs of veterans, who for whatever reason, find themselves alone as they near the end of life.

VET-TO-VET VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Veterans often have a special connection with one another and often relate the best to another service member.

VETERAN RECOGNITION CEREMONY

The veteran recognition program includes a special ceremony where the veteran receives a certificate of appreciation and a service-specific flag to fly proudly in their yard or hang in their home. We recognize the support and sacrifice families of veterans also make and recognize them with a certificate of appreciation.

WORK CLOSELY WITH LOCAL VA TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

These resources include contracted personal care in conjunction with the VA, increased volunteers for veterans needing additional help as well as social services, chaplains, and many other services to help ensure a peaceful transition. We also offer veteran-specific home health and personal care.

Duane Victor Blackwell was born on Christmas Day, December 25th, 1931. He enlisted for military service in December 1950. He served in several branches of the armed forces including active-duty Air Force, Army, National Guard, Navy, and Army Reserves. He was a gunner, jet technician, battalion, recruiter, and expert rifleman, and instructed many soldiers in programs to include NBC (nuclear biological, and chemical) warfare. He completed 35 years of service, achieving the rank of E-9 and retiring as a sergeant major in the Army Reserves.

Refined Hospice & Home Health is honored to name its Hospice program after Duane and hopes his legacy, and the legacy of all veterans, will live on through the services we provide.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!
